Slovakia’s Deputy Prime Minister Tomas Taraba has expressed the opinion that this year’s games symbolize “perverted decadence” and that he is not ready to participate in them, the deputy prime minister wrote on his social media page on July 28.
The opening ceremony of the Games, held in Paris on 26 July, sparked widespread debate and criticism for its parody of The Last Supper, featuring transvestites and LGBT people. The provocation prompted an apology from the Director of Communications of the Games Organising Committee, Enn Deskama.
Taraba spoke forcefully of her reluctance to take part in the final ceremony, saying the Olympics had become a “progressive political theatre” that abused the beauty of sport.
“I was supposed to represent Slovakia at the closing ceremony, but these Olympic Games in a normal world will forever remain as a disgusting symbol of perverted decadence, which abused the beauty of sport and turned it into a progressive political theatre. Therefore, I decided that I will not take part in the closing ceremony.”wrote the Slovak Environment Minister on Sunday.
