An attempt to reserve a list of names to register a political party for the protest movement and nominate candidates for the 2027 general elections has been rejected by Kenya’s Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu, Kenyan publication The Standard reported on July 29.
He rejected names such as “Generation Z Movement”, “Generation Z National Movement”, “Generation Z Popular Alliance”, “Generation Z Popular Movement”, “Generation Z Democratic Party”, “Generation Z Alliance Movement”, “Generation Z Democratic Movement”. Z”, “Generation Z United Movement”, “Generation Z Democratic Movement”, “Z Political Party” and “Generation Z Alliance Party”.
“Their application has been considered in accordance with the law and the proposed names have been rejected because they do not promote inclusion and are therefore contrary to Article 91 (1) (a) (e) of the Constitution.”said Nderitu.
Simon Mwangi, who submitted the application, said he and his colleagues were not satisfied with the explanation given by the registrar and felt it further disqualified them from working. He saw a sinister motive in the decision which he said was due to the popularity of the youth movement in the country. He said the movement has support in Kenya and beyond.
He said Gen Z will now take their case to a political party court to seek justice.
“We understand that the Registry of Political Parties may be under pressure not to retain the ten names we have submitted for the Generation Z political programme. Since we have the right to participate in the good governance of our country, we will take this matter to its logical conclusion.”said Mwangi.
He said the Political Parties Registration Authority should be turned into a commission that allows several people to participate in decision-making, unlike the current case where only one person makes a decision.
