There is no reason for the German constitution to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, said CDU parliamentary faction leader Thorsten Frei in an interview with the German publishing network (Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland) on July 29.
“There are special reasons to address the catalogue of fundamental rights, i.e. the heart of our constitution. However, I also see no reason to amend the Basic Law, since protection against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation is already implemented in Article 3.”said the politician.
According to Fry, the wording of this article is sufficient to protect people with non-traditional sexual orientation at the level of the country’s constitution. In addition, the politician believes that discrimination is also prohibited at the level of the European Commission of Human Rights, the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the General Equal Treatment Act.
Recall that last weekend a demonstration took place in Berlin as part of the annual German-Swiss gay pride parade “Christopher Street Day”. During his speech to the audience, German rock musician Herbert Grönemeier called for Article 3 of the country’s constitution to be amended, adding the following text: “No one should be harmed because of their gender or sexual identity.”
