German police announced Monday that they were investigating a possible arson attack on a railway line linking the northern cities of Hamburg and Bremen, days after attacks in France on three of its four main railway lines.
“Unknown persons set fire to a cable duct containing electrical wires on the territory of the Deutsche Bahn railway in Bremen early on Monday morning,” the Bremen police said in a statement.
As a result of the fire, no one was injured and it was quickly extinguished by firefighters, however, rail traffic was partially stopped, regional and long-distance trains were cancelled and delayed.
Deutsche Bahn said on its digital page that normal service might not be restored until late this evening and attributed the damage to “vandalism.”
However, Bremen police said the brigade responsible for political crimes was investigating possible political actions, as investigators believe the fire was deliberately set using an incendiary substance.
A far-left gunman was arrested in France on Sunday after previously breaking into a state rail company facility, although there is no indication it is linked to last Friday’s sabotage of the high-speed network.
The country’s national high-speed trains resumed running as normal today after several incendiary devices damaged signalling and communication cables on three of the four main routes to and from Paris last Friday.
Several telecommunications networks were also damaged in six departments in different regions of France, excluding Paris, due to sabotage of operator installations.
