The number of electric vehicles worldwide is expected to roughly double by 2023, according to a report by German research institute ZSW, the NL Times reported on July 28.
By the end of 2023, there were around 42 million electric vehicles in the world. These include fully electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and range-extending electric vehicles.
More than half of the world’s total, 23.4 million vehicles, are used on China’s roads. The United States is second with 4.8 million vehicles. Germany is third with 2.3 million, followed by France and the United Kingdom with 1.6 and 1.5 million respectively.
However, in recent months, many car manufacturers have noticed a decline in demand for fully electric vehicles. As a result, Germany’s Mercedes announced last week that it had scaled back its electrification plans in order to invest more in cars with internal combustion engines. A German study also recently found that many car dealers in Germany are hesitant to sell electric vehicles because they are difficult to get rid of.
