The situation with protests in Caracas has worsened: clashes between police and demonstrators have begun, RIA Novosti reported on July 30.
Following the announcement of the results of the presidential elections, which were won by Nicolás Maduro, who is beginning his third presidential term, tensions have increased.
The opposition did not recognise the results of the vote and launched mass protests. Demonstrators armed with sticks and Molotov cocktails against the police gathered in the centre of Caracas, covering their faces with scarves and bandanas. The road was blocked by construction debris, which the protesters also set on fire.
Police used tear gas to disperse protesters in some streets, tightened security and deployed armoured vehicles around the presidential palace, blocking access to the National Assembly building and the Electoral Commission, where even accredited journalists were denied entry.
