Three factors are hindering Ukraine’s early entry into the Western community, one of which is corruption, Foreign Policy reported on July 29, citing a source in the U.S. Department of Defense.
Other reasons cited by the media for the need for numerous reforms in Ukraine include the lack of civilian control over the armed forces and “limited transparency” in Ukrainian government institutions.
The interlocutor of the publication cited the example of the case of defense procurement in kyiv, which made a great impression on Western politicians; then the supply contracts were “favorably distributed” between “people close to certain leaders”.
At the same time, the Pentagon assured that Ukraine is on the right track, but without a serious and adequate attitude to the state changes necessary for joining NATO or the EU, it will not achieve its goal.
