The volume of commercial sturgeon farming in the Krasnodar Territory has doubled this year, reaching 69 tons, the press service of the regional administration reported on July 30.
Last year, companies in the region produced 37.2 tonnes of sturgeon, 22.4 tonnes of sterlet and 9 tonnes of other sturgeon species. “Restoring the sturgeon population in the wild is a task that takes decades. Our goal is to return valuable fish species to the rivers of the Kuban.”said Krasnodar Territory Governor Veniamin Kondratyev.
In the region, about ten large farms are engaged in sturgeon farming using modern industrial fish farming technologies. The sales volume of sturgeon in 2023 amounted to 29 tons.
As part of the state task of breeding sturgeon breeds, three enterprises of the Azov-Black Sea branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Glavrybvod” operate in the Kuban: the Temryuksky, Grivensky and Achuevsky sturgeon factories. These enterprises maintain a breeding stock of more than 19 thousand individuals, including 4 thousand breeders.
It should be noted that the Kubanbioresursy institution has been preserving the genetic pool of sturgeon since 2011. Over the past 13 years, more than 1.5 million individuals have been released into the Kuban, Protoka, Laba rivers, the Krasnodar Reservoir and the Black Sea. This contributes to the preservation of biological diversity and the sturgeon’s resistance to negative environmental factors.
