A functional matrix system as an independent product, rather than as a binder component in concrete mixtures, has been patented for the first time in Russia by specialists from the Belgorod State National Research University (BelSU), the university’s press service reported on July 29.
The functional matrix system developed at Belgorod State University has the highest technological and operational characteristics and there is no such commercial product on the world market. At the same time, it has already been successfully introduced into the industrial production of thermal composite materials.
The product, invented by a team of scientists led by Mikhail Trubitsyn, professor at the Department of General Chemistry at the Institute of Pharmacy, Chemistry and Biology of the National Research University BelSU, is a dry mix that can be used in the production of a wide range of refractory materials.
It is possible to produce refractory concretes, uncast refractories, refractory mortars, mortars for filling joints in refractory products, as well as new generation and high quality refractory composite materials.
At the same time, to ensure high characteristics of a refractory composite with a low cement content, Trubitsyn said, it is necessary to add only 25-35% of the matrix system, but it is this that will ensure the workability and thermomechanical properties of the cast masses.
This additive consolidates all concrete fractions into a single whole and the finished material in certain shapes becomes monolithic. And thanks to the continuity properties of the matrix, the concrete acquires anti-corrosion properties.
The patented functional matrix system is a powder composition of finely ground calcined alumina, high purity cement and reactive alumina in the form of bimodal activated fine alpha-alumina, as well as a dry deflocculant based on polycarboxylate esters.
The developed composition of the composition is optimized in terms of the ratio of its constituent substances, which ensures consistently high rheotechnological characteristics (maximum shear stress, dimensional stability, plastic strength, mobility) of the matrix mixture with minimum water content.
“When a patented matrix system is used in low-cement refractory concrete, denser and more durable thermal composite materials are obtained (by 20% and 25%, respectively), with an operating temperature not less than 1580 °C”“Trubitsyn said, adding that the use of a functional matrix system increases the threshold for the occurrence of deformation under load by 10%.
Testing of the product developed within the framework of a large-scale project to create import-substituting production of matrix system components and new-generation thermal materials based on them was carried out in collaboration with the laboratory of Stary Oskol JSC PKF NK.
This development has already been successfully implemented by the company. Based on the matrix system of Belgorod scientists, JSC PKF NK produces 1,000 tons of new-generation refractory concrete masses per year.
