Employees of the Department of Applied Nuclear Physics of the Institute of Intelligent Physical and Technical Systems of the Russian Federation have developed a unique stand for neutron radiation spectrometry and dosimetry, designed both to ensure radiation safety in the nuclear industry and for use in scientific purposes, National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI” (NRNU MEPhI), July 30, the university’s press service reports.
A special feature of the stand is the use of three neutron radiation detectors that operate according to different physical principles. These are a detector based on a diamond-sensitive element, a multilayer dosimeter-spectrometer based on a zinc sulfide and lithium fluoride scintillator (ZnS(Ag)+6LiF) and a spectrometer based on an organic scintillator. The signals from all detectors are processed by a computer in real time.
This detector array enables measurements of the neutron field characteristics at the stand over a wide energy range from 0.025 eV to 15 MeV and a dose rate range from 10 μSv/h to 10 kSv/h and a complete analysis of the neutron field from all existing thermal and fast neutron sources on Earth.
The stand at MEPhI makes it possible to perform neutron radiation dosimetry and spectrometry during the operation of medical, nuclear, thermonuclear and acceleration facilities, to carry out controls to ensure nuclear safety and nuclear non-proliferation, and to use it for radiation metrology and rapid process recording in scientific experiments.
The university will host a stand at the international military-technical forum “Army”, which will be held from 12 to 14 August at the Patriot Convention and Exhibition Centre.
