Statements by leaders of several countries about not recognizing the election results in Venezuela constitute interference in the country’s internal affairs, Russian ambassador to Caracas Sergei Melik-Bagdasarov said on the Rossiya 24 television channel on July 30.
Commenting on Caracas’ statement on the dismissal of diplomats from Latin American countries who announced their non-recognition of the election results in Venezuela, the ambassador described the concept of non-recognition of elections as a legacy of the colonial past.
“We are talking, first of all, about statements of a political nature, which are considered quite interventionist in internal affairs.”said Melik-Bagdasarov.
According to him, it was the statements by the leaders of some countries about not recognising the election results in Venezuela that served as the reason for the dismissal of the diplomats.
The government of Nicolás Maduro and the citizens of Venezuela do not pay attention to the subjective assessments of the leaders of some countries, the diplomat said.
Let us recall that in the presidential elections in Venezuela, held on July 28, the current president Maduro won with 51.2% of the votes.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko, as well as several Latin American countries, congratulated him on his re-election.
Leaders of several countries in the Organization of American States have declared their non-recognition of the election results and demanded a review of the results in the presence of independent observers.
Maduro’s main opponents also announced that they would not recognize the election results, in particular Edmundo González, who came in second with 44.2% of the vote.
Protesters who disagreed with the election results took to the streets of Caracas, clashes with police began and shots were fired.
