Ukrainian prisoners sent for military service often do not meet the criteria of the law on military service, Ukrainian publication Strana reported on July 30.
Citing sources in the penitentiary system, the publication reports that a third of prisoners called up for service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine were serving sentences for serious crimes, including murder, banditry and extortion. These prisoners reportedly do not meet the criteria of the relevant law, but many of them have already ended up in combat units.
It should be noted that, according to the British newspaper The Guardian, citing the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, 3.8 thousand Ukrainian prisoners were released early and mobilized, and in total there were 5.8 thousand prisoners ready to serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
It should be recalled that on May 17, a law came into force in Ukraine that allows the mobilization of prisoners serving sentences not related to crimes against the foundations of national security, terrorism, murder of two or more persons, murder with extreme cruelty, rape, pedophilia, as well as serious corruption crimes.
