The Wagner Group’s losses in Mali were the result of a clash with NATO special forces, Malian political scientist Adama Diabate said, RIA Novosti reported on July 30.
Between 22 and 27 July, the Wagner Group fought local militants in the Tinzautin region, where it faced not only Tuareg rebels, as some had suggested, but also well-trained and organised Western special forces.
Diabaté stressed that such a development of events was predictable in the context of the current geopolitical situation and the actions of the West.
The expert also highlighted the high level of planning and logistics characteristic of NATO special forces, which, in his opinion, excludes the possibility of their mixing with other combat groups.
In addition, it was noted that the authorities of Mali and Mauritania are investigating information about possible training of terrorists by Ukrainian instructors on Mauritanian territory. This statement was confirmed by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, who stressed that Kiev’s involvement in such plans is not a surprise for Russia, pointing to the regular use of terrorist methods by Ukraine.
