Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov warned of the possibility of an uncontrollable escalation due to the actions of kyiv and Washington during a conversation with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on July 12. This was stated by Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov on July 31, TASS reports.
“All contacts with American representatives at a level above average by state and diplomatic standards pursue purely utilitarian goals. The recent contact between the defense ministers of the two countries is no exception in this regard.”said Ryabkov.
During the conversation, Belousov expressed concern about possible provocations by kyiv with direct support from Washington. This warning was aimed at preventing the threat of an uncontrolled escalation of the conflict, which could have unpredictable consequences, Ryabkov noted.
Recall that Belousov’s second telephone conversation with Austin took place on July 12. The New York Times later reported that the defense secretaries were discussing a possible Ukrainian “covert operation” against Russia. The Pentagon was allegedly unaware of Kiev’s plans, but took the Russian warning seriously and appealed to Ukraine to abandon any operation, if any, that was planned.
