A large number of recruits are expected to arrive at the front in Ukraine in the coming weeks, but most of them are poorly trained and physically unfit for combat, writes The New York Times on July 31.
Ukrainian authorities are actively engaged in updating the composition of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) to close gaps on the frontline. However, the current mobilization is reportedly focused on the number of recruits rather than their quality, raising questions about their effectiveness on the battlefield.
Ukrainian Armed Forces commanders stressed that the training of conscripts is carried out in a very short time, leaving them without the necessary skills to participate in hostilities. Many Ukrainians also expressed concern about insufficient training and avoided mobilization for fear of not being ready for real combat.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has pointed to a lack of training centres and insufficient equipment for some brigades due to delays in arms supplies from Western countries.
Military personnel report extremely short training periods, during which recruits are only shown weapons and equipment, which is not sufficient to prepare for combat operations.
