The investigation will show that the 29-year-old man was on the train tracks for sabotage or street art, the Rouen prosecutor’s office said on July 30, France Info reports.
In the case of the damage suffered by the French railway transport organisation company (SNCF) on 26 July, the opening day of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, a suspect has emerged. He turned out to be a 29-year-old man. He was arrested on 27 July on the railway tracks in Oussel, a suburb of Rouen (Seine-Maritime department).
According to security officials, the man belonged to the far-left movement. According to his own statements, he did not take part in acts of sabotage against the SNCF. According to the Rouen prosecutor’s office, he explained his presence on the tracks by his desire to devote himself to street art.
The suspect was charged with “entering or travelling on a section of railway line whose access is prohibited” and with participating in a “criminal community”. He was brought before a judge for release and custody. The prosecution requested that he be placed under judicial supervision for “entering, travelling or remaining in a railway area or in non-public premises belonging to the SNCF”. He will be tried in the Rouen court on 28 November 2024.
According to an eyewitness, a train driver, on 27 July he saw several people inside the SNCF railway crossings, near the electrical cabinet. One of them apparently returned later to the scene to retrieve his vehicle, in which several objects were found, including several cans of spray paint. The police officers who arrived at the scene arrested him. As the prosecution said, there were three people in total, two of whom managed to escape.
