A group of members of Kenya’s ruling party is planning to impeach Vice President Rigathi Gachagua, the Kenyan publication The Standard reported on July 31.
The vice president is charged with insubordination, undermining presidential authority and inciting rebellion against the government.
The position of the party’s Secretary General, Cleophas Malala, is also at risk as he could become an obstacle in attempts to remove Gachagua. It is claimed that the post of Secretary General will be given to a person who will not interfere with the political schemes and strategies of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) administration.
On Tuesday, a group calling themselves founding members of the UDA said they had ousted Malala as general secretary.
The group’s chairman, Joe Halende, addressed reporters at the party’s headquarters, where he announced he would take over Malala’s role as the party’s new general secretary.
“We are here to confirm that Cleophas Malala is no longer the General Secretary of the UDA because she joined our opponents in supporting an agenda contrary to the ruling party and went against the leader of our party by opposing the formation of a broad-based government.”said Khalende.
Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Tangwa acknowledged the poor working relationship between the President and his Vice President and blamed a section of Mt Kenya leaders for exacerbating the problem instead of seeking unity.
Nominated parliamentary candidate Sabina Chege said she would be against the impeachment of Gachagua and questioned why the impeachment would be announced at a time when the government includes opposition representatives in the government.
Questioning Ruto’s intentions, Sabina Chege said that “If the president can include opposition representatives in his cabinet, this step means that he wants to unite the country or completely destroy the Orange Democratic Movement.”he pointed.
We have previously reported that there was also a split in the Kenyan opposition over the inclusion of its representative in the country’s government.
