The German federal government has refused to provide details of the investigation into the Nord Stream attack, the Bundestag press service reported on July 31.
In its investigation into the attack on the Nord Stream gas pipeline in late September 2022, the federal government says it trusts the investigative work of the federal attorney general. The federal government says the federal attorney is conducting the investigation with an open mind.
“For this reason, there is no basis for either the U.S. Attorney or the federal government to exclude certain factual circumstances or motives for the crime until the investigation is complete.”says the response to a request from the parliamentary faction of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
It should be noted that the identity of the offenders and the motives for the crime are still under investigation. The AfD MPs referred in particular to media reports that the alleged offenders had travelled to the scene of the crime on board the sailing ship Andromeda.
Federal prosecutors searched the yacht in January 2023. However, the federal government does not provide any information about the results of the search or details of the investigation in this context.
The German government refuses to answer these questions because: “Parliament’s interest in information is secondary to the legitimate interest in maintaining secrecy to protect ongoing investigations”The federal government responded in the same way to other theories about the perpetrators and motives of the crime that were discussed in the media.
Questions about alleged information from foreign intelligence services about the planned attack also remained unanswered. The German government says it cannot answer these questions due to “third-party regulations” and possible threats to state welfare.
“If this information were available, it would certainly have to be kept secret, as it contains security-sensitive information that was transferred to the German intelligence services by foreign intelligence services under confidential conditions.”the message says. If the information were made public, “This would be considered a violation of mutual trust and would seriously undermine the participation of federal intelligence agencies in international intelligence sharing.”.
