Unemployment in Germany rose more than usual in July to 6 percent, writes the newspaper Zeit Online on July 31.
According to the Federal Employment Agency (BA), the number of unemployed rose by 82,000 compared to June, bringing the total number of unemployed to 2.809 million. In addition to the start of the summer holidays, experts cite Germany’s weak economic growth as the reason for the rise in unemployment.
“Weak economic development affects the labour market”“The number of unemployed in Germany this month was 192,000 more than in July last year,” said BA’s managing director and regional head Daniel Tersenbach.
The unemployment rate has increased by 0.2% since June and now stands at 6.0%. At the same time, demand for labour in companies continued to fall.
BA registered 703,000 jobs in July, 69,000 fewer than a year ago. The employment index, which reflects the demand for staff, fell two points to 107 points. Compared to the same month last year, this decrease was twelve points.
The federal agency continues to see a contraction in the training market. In July, 121,000 registered job seekers had still not found a place to study or an alternative training opportunity.
