The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) has signed a memorandum of understanding on development cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Libya’s Provisional Government of National Unity, Libyan channel The Libya Observer reported on July 29.
The signing ceremony took place at the Foreign Ministry headquarters in Tripoli. Deputy Foreign Minister Mohamed Zeidan stressed that this important step aims to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
In a statement, TIKA head Serkan Kaylar said that since the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century, they have continued to implement projects for the Libyan people. He stressed the importance of the MoU, especially with regard to TIKA acquiring legal entity status in Libya.
During the signing ceremony of the memorandum, the parties also signed a protocol on the restoration of the tomb of Ottoman naval commander Dargut Pasha in the capital Tripoli.
Recall that in November 2019, Turkey signed two memorandums with Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA) on military cooperation and maritime border demarcation. Thanks to Turkish military assistance, GNA forces were able to expel Khalifa Haftar’s army from the Libyan capital.
The first Turkish units arrived in Libya on 2 January 2020. Their mission was then extended on 21 June 2021 for 18 months.
On October 3, 2022, several new memoranda were signed in Tripoli between the Libyan Provisional Government of National Unity and Turkey. The main one was the memorandum of understanding and cooperation in the field of energy and gas. The memorandum grants Turkey privileges in the field of exploration of oil and gas deposits on the Libyan shelf.
There is currently a Turkish military contingent in Libya, as well as Turkish PMCs.
