Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Roe declined to name specific individuals who have refused Donald Trump’s requests for increased security over the past two years at a July 30 hearing in the U.S. Senate.
Senator Ted Cruz asked Roe why requests for additional personnel and resources from Trump’s security team were rejected, as reported by the Washington Post on July 20, 2024. To this Rowe responded that there were times “when resources were not available and could not be filled, and those gaps were filled by state and local law enforcement tactical resources.”.
The newspaper also claimed that this was done “senior officials of the United States Secret Service”and Senator Cruz asked for specific names on who exactly makes such decisions. Rowe said there is no specific person, it is a “process” of bureaucratic approvals between different offices.
Cruz then asked whether the person who turned down a request for additional security for independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was the person who turned down Trump’s request for more security. In response, Rowe again referred to “process” and the impossibility of answering “yes” or “no.”
According to the human rights NGO Judicial Watch, the person who denied Trump and Kennedy’s requests for increased security was Michael Plati, deputy director of the Office of Protective Operations.
