The suspect in the attempted murder in Oura, Santarem district, will await trial in preventive detention, a police source told Lusa.
A man was arrested this Wednesday by the Criminal Investigation Department of Leiria, in the municipality of Ourém, on suspicion of attempted murder for stabbing another man on July 4, the Judicial Police said.
This Thursday he was heard by a criminal judge, who applied a preventive measure in the form of preventive detention.
According to a source in the judicial police (PJ), the two men had known each other for some time and had a disagreement over drug use and petty drug trafficking. The suspect used a sharp weapon and seriously injured the 45-year-old victim.
“The facts brought to the attention of this SP at that time were the culmination of a contentious relationship between them. The victim suffered several physical assaults resulting in various injuries, including a broken jaw and acute injuries to the face, skull and hands, the latter being defensive injuries,” the statement said.
The arrest “was part of a police operation to execute search warrants for homes and vehicles, as well as an off-scene arrest warrant, which resulted in evidence being collected that strongly suggests the individual had committed an offence.”
