The monument to director Alexei Balabanov will be erected on one of the streets of Yekaterinburg, the mayor of the city Alexey Orlov announced during a meeting of the council for the preservation and development of cultural heritage, the press service of the city administration reported on August 1.
One of the participants of the meeting, producer Oleg Genenfeld, recalled that 2026 will be the year of the 40th anniversary of the Sverdlovsk rock club. He proposed to mark this date, including by unveiling a monument to Balabanov.
“Rustam Galyamov has already taken over the construction of the monument to Alexei Balabanov so that it can be inaugurated in the autumn. There will be a monument! — Orlov replied. — Let’s discuss what it should look like.”.
Let us recall that director Alexey Balabanov was born in Sverdlovsk in 1959. A plaque was placed in his memory at the school where he studied.
In addition to the critically acclaimed films Brother and Brother-2, Balabanov also directed the films Zhmurki (2005), Cargo 200 (2007), Morphine (2008) and Stoker (2010), which drew harsh criticism and accusations of “chernukha.”
Thus, the film “Cargo 200” refused to be released for almost a year. After seeing it at the Kinotavr festival, French critic Joel Chapron asked: “What’s next, snuff?”.
We also note that the monument “Glory to Labor!”, which will be inaugurated in 2023, was erected in an industrial zone on the outskirts of Yekaterinburg.
A monument to the first teacher was erected on the territory of the Sverdlovsk Regional Departmental Pedagogical College, which was inaugurated to mark the Year of the Teacher in 2023.
