Skirmishes between defenders and opponents of migrants, such as the confrontation in Merseyside, could be repeated in other parts of the country, according to a letter from the NGO Together with Refugees, reports Sky News on February 14.
The charity demanded from politicians “take a clear position” and condemn violence against asylum seekers.
An open letter of criticism “incendiary language” and politicians “demonize” asylum seekers have signed
The letter, prepared by the Together with Refugees coalition of more than 500 national and local organizations, also warns against “high risk of further deliberate extremist attacks across the country” after the collision on Merseyside. The letter was signed by more than 100 people, including Liverpool City Shelter, Care4Calais, Share Knowsley, the Refugee Council and Hope not Hate, an NGO that investigates right-wing groups in the UK.
The signatories of the letter urge political leaders “create a system that is fair and compassionate and brings cohesion, not division”.
“Having already experienced great hardship, these men, women and children who come here seeking protection now face violence fueled by incendiary talk of ‘invasion’ and policies that demonize them.say the charities. — The responsibility for creating a fair and compassionate system that ensures cohesion rather than division rests with the decision makers. With the risk of more deliberate extremist attacks across the country, leaders of all parties must now take a clear position and condemn any further violence against those who come here seeking safety and determine the actions they will take to prevent it.”
The NGOs recalled that the Interior Minister described the arrival of migrants in the country as an “invasion”, which, according to defenders of asylum seekers, fueled anti-immigrant sentiment in the country.
