Detained in Russia since March last year, 32-year-old Evan Gershkovich was greeted with a big hug from his mother as soon as he arrived in the U.S. on Friday. His father and sister were also waiting for him.
A Wall Street Journal journalist sentenced to 16 years in prison for espionage and other prisoners, including political activists and opponents of the war in Ukraine, were received at the Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in a historic prisoner swap between Russia and Western nations. It was also a moment of great emotion, with the daughters of Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, 47, running to hug their mother.
Alsou was arrested in October 2023 and sentenced to six and a half years in prison for spreading “false information” about the Russian army. Also released was 54-year-old former Marine Paul Whelan, who spent nearly six years in prison in Russia on espionage charges. On the Russian side, a journalist accused of espionage who posed as a Spanish correspondent was released, as well as intelligence agent Vadim Krasikov, who was sentenced to life in prison in Germany for the murder of a former Chechen separatist leader.
