The risk of rural fires this Monday is highest in most municipalities in the northern and central interior districts of mainland Portugal, as well as in four municipalities in the district of Faro.
According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), other municipalities in the area, like those in Faro, are at very high risk of fire.
Areas below Lisbon, Santarem and Portalegre pose a high risk.
IPMA forecasts that these fire danger levels will continue in the coming days.
The fire risk defined by IPMA has five levels, from ‘reduced’ to ‘maximum’, and calculations are based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and rainfall over the past 24 hours.
The areas of Bragança, Évora, Guarda, Beja, Castelo Branco and Portalegre are under yellow warning this Monday due to hot weather until 6:00 p.m.
This Monday will see mostly clear skies, with strong winds in places along the western coast and in the highlands. Maximum temperatures are still expected to drop in the North and Central regions.
