Social media platform TikTok will withdraw a program that rewarded users for staying on the platform longer following an infringement case brought by the European Commission, it was announced on Monday.
In a statement, the community leader announced that TikTok, which is currently the largest digital social network, will be discontinuing the TikTok Lite Rewards program.
The program rewarded users for spending the most time on the platform, leading the European Commission to open a case on April 22 for breach of digital platform laws.
The program was suspended three days after the social network itself opened the process.
And this Monday, TikTok committed to shutting down that program and not creating others that reward users for usage time and interaction, which would “lead to the possibility of addiction” among citizens, the European Commission said.
Chief Executive Ursula von der Leyen will “continue to monitor” the social network’s activities to determine whether it complies with its “mandatory obligations” under the law.
According to a message sent by Lusa after the European Commission’s announcement, the social network said it was “satisfied” with the “amicable resolution” of the dispute with the community leader, and recalled that it had already “voluntarily suspended” the program in question and that it was being released in France and Spain.
