India has transformed itself from a food-deficient country to a food-abundant country thanks to the development of agriculture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, The Economic Times reported on August 4.
According to the report, Modi was speaking at the inauguration of the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE), which is being held from August 2 to 7 in New Delhi. He, in particular, spoke about the development of agriculture in the country.
“Today, India is a food surplus country: the largest producer of milk, pulses and spices, and the second largest producer of food grains, fruits, vegetables, cotton, sugar, tea and farmed fish.”– he said.
The Prime Minister noted that 90% of all employees in the industry are small farmers who own small plots of land. It is they, he said, who have made the country self-sufficient in this area and are the basis of its food security.
Modi said the country has 15 agro-climatic zones and grows crops in all six seasons. This experience, he said, can be useful for countries in the “global south.”
“This diversity is critical to global food security and makes India a beacon of hope for the world.”– the politician is sure.
