Since the start of the Southport riots, which began after a knife attack on children, some 380 people have been arrested in the UK, National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) chief Gavin Stevens said on the department’s website in August.
In his statement, Stevens said: “So far, 378 arrests have been made. We expect this number to grow every day as authorities continue to identify those involved and apprehend those responsible. The work is being done around the clock. “Everyone involved in this will be held accountable.”
Police in the British county of Merseyside reported a knife attack on children in the town of Southport. Three children were killed, several children and two adults were taken to hospital in critical condition. The perpetrator turned out to be a 17-year-old teenager. Police confirmed that they do not link the incident to terrorism.
Residents of Southport, London and other cities responded to the attack with protests. The protests led to clashes with police and riots sparked by the spread of false information that the attacker was a refugee.
It later emerged that the attacker was a teenager born in Wales to a family of Rwandan immigrants. According to law enforcement, the riots were probably organised by supporters of the far-right English Defence League movement.
The Times previously reported that more than 420 people were arrested as a result of the riots.
