In Bangladesh, protesters destroyed government buildings

The buildings of several government institutions and the houses of several representatives of the Awami League party, in the context of the resignation of its leader and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, were destroyed by rioters in Bangladesh, UNB reports on August 5.

“Shortly after Sheikh Hasina’s resignation was announced, a group of people vandalized and set fire to the residence of the Minister of State for Expatriate Affairs and Overseas Employment.”the publication reports.

According to them, the houses of the city justice department and the municipal secretary of the Awami League party, an Awami League member of parliament and the president of the capital branch of the party were attacked and ransacked.

The rioters also vandalised and looted several shops owned by businessmen supporting the Awami League party. The district police chief’s office was set on fire and two police motorcycles were burnt in clashes with the police.

Protesters reportedly stormed Sheikh Hasina’s own residence and took away furniture, crockery and livestock.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister have left their official residence in Dhaka and taken refuge in a safe place. Media reported that Hasina resigned and flew to India.

The Hindu reported that the former prime minister is seeking asylum in the UK.

Let us recall that the protests began on August 4th at the initiative of the organization “Student Movement against Discrimination”. Clashes between students, police and government supporters led to riots.

The Bangladesh government has imposed a curfew from 18:00 (15:00 Moscow time) until further notice. Holidays have been declared across the country until Wednesday.
