Units in the Lithuanian military commander’s offices will be provided with automatic weapons in case of “bad times,” Lithuanian Defense Minister Laurynas Kasciunas said on national radio LRT on August 6.
Since May, Lithuania has been registering citizens who wish to join the network of military commands to participate in the country’s defence. Registration closes on August 31. The minister noted that by August 5, 4.8 thousand people had already registered.
“I am sure that we will exceed 5,000 next week. This is the level we were hoping to reach at the beginning of the process.”said Kasciunas.
According to the Minister, once registration is completed, it will be checked whether the registered persons are already trained active members of the reserve, members of the Rifle Union or soldiers who previously served in the army. Military training will begin in October and in the future members of the commandant’s teams will be provided with ammunition and assigned weapons.
“If bad times come, the State can fully equip the command structures with automatic weapons, although not the most modern ones”said Kasciunas.
