Panamanian authorities have said at least 39 people have died in Panama when a migrant bus crashed into the US.
The accident, which injured 28 people, occurred in Gualac, Chiriqui province, about 400 km west of the capital. There were 66 people on the bus, including the driver and assistant.
The migrants were “transported from Darien (the jungle region on the border with Colombia) to the shelter,” said Panama’s President Laurentino Cortiso.
“The government extends its condolences to the families of those killed in this accident and reiterates its commitment to continue providing humanitarian assistance and decent conditions to address the issue of migration,” the president wrote on Twitter.
Since the beginning of 2023, about 33,000 people have crossed the Darien Jungle Zone.
