The provocation at the solemn parade in honor of the Day of the Russian Navy in St. Petersburg was prepared by the Ukrainian special services, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov said on the Rossiya-1 TV channel on August 4.
According to him, they planned “to cause maximum damage and get the maximum media coverage they need”as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov were present at the naval parade.
However, the latter, a few days before the event, had a telephone conversation with the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, in order to convince Kiev to abandon its intentions, Ryabkov noted. And, apparently, the signal from the Russian military leadership “had an effect”he added.
The deputy head of the Russian Foreign Ministry explained that in this way it was possible “to prevent a new escalation”.
