A 28-year-old man suspected of killing prostitutes in central Mozambique’s Sofala province has been arrested in Beira, Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (Cernic) said on Wednesday.
According to information presented by Sernik on Wednesday, “there are many elements” that link the suspect to at least two crimes: the strangulation of prostitutes and another crime involving sexual assault.
“We are dealing with this man who has been arrested and charged with aggravated murder. […] He has dedicated himself to killing female sex workers at various times, most recently a woman who was found dead in Beira, Cernic’s representative in Sofala, Alfeu Sitoi, said.
The same source added that the detainee is serving a one-year and six-month prison sentence in Sofala Province Prison, also for murder, and was released on June 21, and is also charged in another case with abuse of a 2-year-old child.
Sernik also said that Sofala province has already recorded six murders in 2024, compared to five cases in 2023, attributing the increase to the period after the suspect’s release.
