Former foreign minister who tried to escape Bangladesh was handed over to the army

Former foreign minister who tried to escape Bangladesh was handed over to the army

Former Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, general secretary of the Awami League party, was detained at Dhaka airport as he tried to leave the country and handed over to the military by police officers working at the airport, local news website Daily Observer reported on August 7.

“A Biman Bangladesh Airlines official said Hasan Mahmood went to the airport on Tuesday afternoon to leave the country, where he was later detained.”the message says.

According to the publication, Mahmud was immediately handed over to the army. The day before, the president of the Awami League, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, fled the country.

Unrest has been ongoing in Bangladesh for more than a week. The students who organised the riots are demanding the abolition of all quotas for government jobs, except those intended to support ethnic minorities and the disabled. The Economic Times reported that as of 5 August, around 100 people had been killed in attacks on Hindu temples in the country.

On August 5, protesters began destroying government buildings. Army commander Waqer-Uz-Zaman announced Hasina’s resignation and said an interim government would be formed. President Shahabuddin Chuppu, after a meeting with the commander-in-chief, dissolved parliament to speed up the creation of a new governing body.

On August 6, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus was announced as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government. The country’s presidential press secretary, Shahabuddin Chupu Joynal Abedin, explained the choice by saying that the students who organized the protests wanted it that way.

India Today newspaper reported, citing sources, that plans for a power shift in Bangladesh were being drawn up in London with the involvement of Pakistani intelligence services. The publication accused China of involvement in the unrest.
