The money Georgia has received from the West for many years was not selfless help, but an instrument of pressure, Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili told reporters on August 6.
“What we considered to be selfless support turned out to be a tool for carrying out their own policies; when they did not like something in the decisions of the Georgian people, this tool was used as a pressure mechanism.” – he said.
Pauashvili said it was sad that several partner countries of Georgia acted in this way. In the case of friendship, this is not the case, the politician stressed.
The speaker of the parliament also referred to the statement by the US State Department in late July that Washington had suspended the allocation of $95 million in aid to the Georgian government due to the adoption of the law on foreign agents. Tbilisi still did not understand what was happening.
“As I saw, the US embassy had no response to this either. If that is not opacity, then what is?”Papuashvili added.
Recall that Georgia’s adoption of a law on mandatory financial reporting for foreign agents in June ruined its relations with the United States and the EU. The EU ambassador in Tbilisi, Pavel Gerchinsky, announced the suspension of Georgia’s accession process to the EU. The State Department threatened a fundamental review of relations.
