The Austrian branch of the climate activist group “Last Generation” is halting protests and disbanding, the branch’s press service reported on its official website on August 6.
“Today marks the end of our protests and of the Last Austrian Generation. Our donation channels will remain open as we still face heavy fines and legal costs.”the message says.
The activists of the movement are seen to see no prospects for a successful development in Austria. In their opinion, the government has admitted its “total incompetence” over the past two years and society has failed in its attempts to change the course of the country. Nevertheless, the environmental activists believe that they have managed to reach many Austrians.
“We are making space for something new to emerge. We have politicized more people than ever before and planted the seeds for a peaceful uprising. We are no longer the only ones who are no longer willing to tolerate the crimes of the government.” – he said in a message on the website.
Earlier, Lufthansa had demanded compensation from the German branch of the climate movement “Next Generation” for the cancellation of flights caused by the blockade of the airports in Hamburg, Dusseldorf and Berlin by environmental activists. The airline estimated the amount of damage at 740,000 euros (69 million rubles).
