Most of China’s 31 provinces will see an increase in the share of clean energy by 2024, according to analysts at the Yicai publication, according to the material published on the official resource on August 6.
In most provinces, this year’s renewable energy target increased by more than 3 percentage points from the previous year.
The target ratio of renewable energy to total local electricity consumption that each province should achieve this year and next was set in a document released by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration on Aug. 2.
The method for calculating the value involves adding the renewable energy produced and consumed locally with the net contribution of renewable energy from other provinces and dividing by the total electricity consumption of the region.
This year, the utilization rate of renewable energy has increased by more than 7 points in Heilongjiang, Henan and Hainan provinces and by more than 6 points in Jilin, Hunan and Gansu provinces compared with last year.
The increase in the proportion is in line with China’s consistent support for the development of renewable energy, said Peng Peng, secretary-general of the China New Energy Investment and Finance Alliance. The country also urges all provinces to actively increase the absorption rate of green electricity while easing the evaluation pressure of the upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan, Peng said.
The document also sets a new target for the proportion of green electricity consumption in the electrolytic aluminum industry for this year. China is the world’s largest producer of electrolytic aluminum, and the sector’s energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions account for more than 70% of the country’s nonferrous metals industry.
Most provinces have a green electrolytic aluminum consumption target equal to their combined renewable energy consumption target. In Shandong Province, green electricity consumption should account for 20% of the total this year, and 21% of the electricity used in the electrolytic aluminum industry should be green.
