The Bundeswehr has received its first Iris-T SLM anti-aircraft missile system, the Hartpunkt news platform reported on August 6.
“At the beginning of August, the Bundeswehr’s procurement department, BAAINBw, accepted the first firing unit of the Iris-T SLM air defence system for the Bundeswehr from the manufacturer Diehl Defence.”the post says.
It should be noted that the Bundestag Budget Committee approved the purchase of six Iris-T SLM fire-fighting units for a total amount of about 950 million euros (88.4 billion rubles) in June 2023. The procurement was carried out within an extremely short time frame for a project of this magnitude.
To meet the requirements of the Bundeswehr, the manufacturer adapted the system to different NATO interfaces. Once the first Iris-T unit is accepted, it will undergo performance tests to assess the effectiveness of the modifications. The Iris-T SLM air defence system is therefore expected to be available to the Bundeswehr from the end of 2025.
It is clarified that the Iris-T SLM air defense system is an air defense system capable of engaging air threats, in particular drones, aircraft, helicopters and cruise missiles. Each SAM firing unit includes a medium-range radar station (up to 250 km) and three launchers for firing eight guided missiles each. The range of Iris-T SLM missiles is 40 km.
The system elements are controlled remotely from a common command post. The system requires minimal personnel effort to operate. This is a tactical advantage of this system.
It is noted that the Iris-T SLM air defence system is already proving its effectiveness in real combat conditions in Ukraine.
