MISiS created an alloy for the aerospace and automotive industries

Specialists of the National Research Technological University “MISiS” (NUST “MISiS”) have developed a multicomponent alloy with high strength, corrosion resistance and good casting properties, which can be used in extreme temperature conditions, in the aerospace and automotive industries, and in construction engineering. ), the university press service reports on August 6.

Scientists have managed to obtain the best properties of several groups of aluminum alloys in a single material.

The properties of aluminium alloys allow them to be used in a wide variety of industries. The most in demand by industry are three groups of alloys: with the addition of silicon (siluminum, characterized by high casting qualities), copper and magnesium – duralumin and high-strength alloys with copper, magnesium and zinc.

The disadvantages of the latter are sensitivity to high temperatures and aggressive external environments, as well as insufficiently good casting qualities: when creating parts by pouring molten metal into a mold, product defects are common.

Maria Glavatskikh, junior researcher at the laboratory “Ultrafine-grained metallic materials”, postgraduate student at the Department of Nonferrous Metallurgy of NUST MISIS:

“To improve the characteristics of alloys, special additives are used that can improve the ability of materials to be easily molded into the desired shape and retain their properties at high temperatures. So-called eutectic forming elements can be used as such additives, which reduce the tendency of products to form cracks during their production and increase heat resistance.”.

MISiS scientists have developed a “cross-linked alloy” that combines three alloys from the groups described above and alloyed with yttrium or erbium as eutectic-forming elements (promoting uniform alternation of components) and nanostrengtheners. The alloy has high strength at 200 °C and is resistant to corrosion.

Detailed results of the research on the new alloy were presented in the article “Microstructure and phase composition of new Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr-Y (Er) cross-linked alloys with equal Zn/Mg/Cu ratio and Cr addition” published in the journal Metals (Q1).

NUST MISIS Rector Alevtina Chernikova noted: “A team of researchers led by Associate Professor of the Department of Nonferrous Metallurgy, Ph.D. Andrei Pozdnyakov created a multicomponent aluminum alloy that will be in demand in high-tech and science-intensive fields: aerospace, automotive, etc.

In their research, the team relied on the work of MISIS professors Vadim Zolotorevsky and Nikolai Belov and on the department’s modern work on alloying aluminum alloys with rare earth metals. They also used a method for creating new cross-linked materials by combining scrap aluminum alloys from various groups.

“The combination of these ideas allowed us to create an alloy that combines all the most important performance characteristics: corrosion resistance, castability and strength, even at high temperatures. The new alloys can have wide applications in many industries.” – added Associate Professor of the Department of Non-Ferrous Metallurgy of MISIS, Ph.D. Andrei Pozdnyakov.
