The United Nations (UN) warned this Wednesday that about 40,000 Syrian pregnant women are at risk of giving birth to their babies without sanitation in the coming months due to earthquakes in Syria and Turkey.
United Nations Population Fund Regional Director Leyla Baker visited Aleppo, one of the areas in Syria hardest hit by the earthquakes on the 6th, and found that most of the medical facilities were damaged, lacking essential basic equipment for childbirth or medicines.
The UN estimates that as many as 40,000 Syrian women could give birth in the next three months without minimum conditions, which is why it called for donations worth at least US$24 million.
