Two young women were shot dead by a 74-year-old Spaniard on Tuesday evening near the Povoa e Meadas dam in Castelo de Vide, Portalegre district.
The women, aged 17 and 22, were spending the night there when they were approached by their attacker, a resident of the area. The suspect, armed with a shotgun, attempted to rape the victims. When the young women contacted a friend, he alerted authorities.
When authorities arrived, they found the victims naked to the waist and with their hands bound with duct tape. The younger one had an arm injury, the older one had a shoulder injury. The shots were reportedly fired as the two were trying to escape.
The man was detained and the firearm was seized. The young women went to the Portalegre hospital, and the man was detained at the PNR department in Nisa.
CM knows the attacker is a former Spanish soldier known as “Manolo”.
The case has been referred to the Evora Judicial Police, which is investigating.
The man will be questioned at the Nisa court, where he will learn about the coercive measures.
