The program of the historical festival “World War I. The fate of Russia and the world”, which will be held on August 24 and 25 in the town of Gusev (until 1946, Gumbinnen), was published on the event’s Internet portal, the press service of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Czech Republic reported. The Kaliningrad region reported on August 6 on the social network “VKontakte”:
The historical festival is dedicated to the 110th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War and the victory of the Russian army in the Battle of Gumbinnen. The project is supported by the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives and the Russian Military Historical Society. Registration is required to attend the festival (free of charge).
The festival will include exhibitions, film screenings and performances by creative teams. There will be 12 lectures by academics and historians devoted to the combat use of airships and chemical agents in World War I, Russian cinema of these years, armoured vehicles and other topics. There is a space for reconstruction of life during World War I (infirmary, bivouac, headquarters).
Recall that the Battle of Gumbinnen was the first major battle of World War I. It took place in August 1914 and ended with the victory of the Russian army. As a result, Germany was forced to transfer additional forces to the Eastern Front, weakening the Western Front, which ultimately led to the strategic victory of the British and French forces at the Marne in September 1914.
