Catalan independence activist and former regional government president Carles Puigdemont returned to Spain on Thursday after nearly seven years living abroad to escape the country’s justice system.
Puigdemont made a public appearance on the streets of Barcelona this Thursday, a few minutes before 9am local time (8am in Lisbon), at a rally attended by hundreds of people and called by the party to which he belongs, Together for Catalonia (JxCat).
Elected as a member of parliament in the Catalan elections on May 12, Puigdemont announced on Wednesday that he intends to attend a parliamentary session convened to vote on the inauguration of the president of the Catalan autonomous government (known as the Generalitat) this Thursday.
