Former Mozambican Finance Minister Manuel Chang was sentenced Thursday in the United States in a hidden debt case.
The verdict was handed down by a federal jury in New York, the Associated Press (AP) reports. Chang was accused of accepting bribes and conspiring to divert funds from Mozambique’s efforts to protect and expand its gas and fishing industries in order to enrich himself and defraud investors.
Chang, who was finance director from 2005 to 2015, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His lawyers said the former minister was doing what his government wanted when he signed promises that Mozambique would repay the loans and that there was no evidence of financial compensation to the then ruler.
