Manuel Quintas, the former Spanish soldier who shot and attempted to rape two young women in Castelo de Vide, Portalegre, had already been arrested twice in Spain. “Manolo,” known in the neighboring country as “El Quintas,” was sentenced to 76 years in prison for the murder of two young men on Las Pallas Island in Zamora in 1983.
Of those 76, he served only 13, being released in 1996 for good behavior. A month after his release, he raped a woman in Zamora. According to the Spanish press, the victim was sunbathing on the riverbank when “Manolo” threatened her with a gun and a knife. He raped her several times over three hours.
He was arrested again in 1996 and released in 2017 with a preventive measure: he could not return to Zamora for five years.
Considered dangerous, the sexual predator, who was part of the Foreign Legion, crossed the border and settled in a camper van near the Povoa e Meadas dam in Castelo de Vide.
Last Tuesday evening, “Manolo” attacked two young women on the bank of the dam, tried to rape them and shot them. He was eventually arrested.
Double murder
“El Quintas” committed one of the crimes that still marks the city of Zamora. The man killed a couple of students, aged 18 and 19, on the island of Las Pallas. Aurora Barbero Luelmo and José Manuel Tamame Dominguez decided to take a walk along the river when they were surprised by “Manolo”, who stole money and thread from them, gun in hand.
The killer tied up the couple to prevent them from pursuing him, but Aurora began to scream in panic and angered “El Quintas”. The killer threw the girl into the river and pushed her until she drowned. He then grabbed Jose and strangled him with a handkerchief.
Five days later, police caught El Quintas, who confessed to the crimes.
