Xavier Manso, seen helping escort Carles Puigdemont on Thursday, is one of two police officers detained on suspicion of complicity in the Catalan independence activist’s widely publicised escape.
Manso usually accompanies the exiled politician, the Spanish press reports. Two Mossos d’Esquadra officers were arrested on Thursday, with a second police officer suspected of having borrowed the white Honda in which Puigdemont fled.
Several police sources told the newspaper that Manso was one of those detained. El Espanyol. Mossos colleagues regret the policeman’s “assistance” in the escape, which would have damaged Operation Jaula.
“He wasn’t hiding: yesterday he was in plain sight [quinta-feira] in photographs, and before that he was also seen performing security at rallies. The public has been following Puigdemont for a long time,” the agents clarify.
The escort work has already earned Manso a mention in the “Volokh affair,” which is investigating alleged corruption by independent businessmen. The agent will pass on details of confidential documents to Puigdemont’s entourage.
The head of the “Mossos d’Esquadra” said on Friday that the detained officers “do not deserve to wear the uniform” of the Catalan police.
