The General Inspectorate of Health Activities (IGAS) revealed on Friday that an order had been issued for a “verification process” into the circumstances in which a user wearing a green bracelet died in September at the Viana do Castelo hospital.
“The process of verification” of the circumstances of death “of the patient checked with a green bracelet in the emergency department of this hospital in Santa Luzia, in Viana do Castelo, which is part of the local health unit of Alto Minho (ULSAM), “will begin on September 2,” IGAS said today in response to questions from Lusa.
IGAS explains that the process was initiated in May and is aimed at “assessing the quality of services provided in terms of the readiness of assistance provided to the user in the Emergency Service”.
On May 17, a 57-year-old man died in the emergency department of Santa Luzia Hospital, about seven hours after he was given a green bracelet during triage, in less urgent situations that can wait 120 minutes for medical attention.
On June 11, ULSAM said the investigation, launched after the death of a patient wearing a green bracelet, had been closed at the suggestion of an instructor who concluded there was no evidence the treatment “deserved any censorship.”
“The investigator concluded that, having carried out a critical analysis of all the elements collected, no indication was found that the maintenance and monitoring of the user (…) on May 17, 2024 deserved any censure from any professional of the Santa Luzia Hospital in Viana do Castelo,” the ULSAM press release stated.
According to a progress report from the investigation, which began May 21 and ended May 27, the instructor “proposed archiving the files, which was accepted and approved by the ULSAM board of directors.”
“The Board of Directors of ULSAM therefore understands, without prejudice to what may arise from a lawsuit that complies with its terms, that the care of the user in the emergency service at Santa Luzia Hospital […] who unfortunately passed away, a situation which we regret occurred in accordance with good clinical practice and the rules of the applicable “legis” “artis”, the note adds.
