A Portuguese woman is among the fatalities in a plane crash on Friday in Sao Paulo state, Brazil, that killed all 62 people on board, a Foreign Ministry source told Luce on Saturday.
A source in the Foreign Ministry informed Lusa this Saturday that a Portuguese victim, “a 48-year-old woman,” has been confirmed in the plane crash that occurred on Friday with the VOEPASS airline.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is already in contact with the family and deeply regrets the death of this Portuguese woman, as well as the other victims, expressing its sincere condolences to all family members,” the ministry said in a statement.
A tragedy occurred in a note published on a social network.
The VOEPASS aircraft, a twin-engine ATR-72-500, was flying between Cascavel and Sao Paulo when it crashed at around 1:25 p.m. (5:25 p.m. in Lisbon).
Videos posted on social media showed the plane circling around before crashing with a loud bang very close to some houses.
According to the specialized website Flightradar, the plane made two more flights that morning before crashing.
The government of the state of Sao Paulo announced the creation of a crisis office set up at Guarulhos airport, where the plane was heading, to clarify the causes of the crash – since the discovery of the black box has already been confirmed – and to identify the bodies of the victims and support their families.
In a statement, VOEPASS said it “prioritises providing unlimited assistance to the families of the victims and is cooperating effectively with the authorities to determine the causes of the accident.”
Portuguese President and Prime Minister Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Luis Montenegro sent condolences to Lula da Silva.
