An Israeli attack on a refugee school in the Gaza Strip on Saturday killed nearly 100 people, including women and children.
The building, which housed about 350 displaced families and had a mosque on its ground floor, was hit by several rockets early Saturday morning as residents were performing morning prayers. “We have 93 martyrs so far, including 11 children and six women,” a Palestinian Civil Defense source said.
The Israeli army says the attack targeted two dozen Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants who were using the school as an operational base, raising doubts about the real number of casualties. “The figures put forward by Hamas do not correspond to the information we have, nor the type of ammunition used, nor the precision of the attack,” a military spokesman said, assuring that the area of the mosque hit was reserved for men and did not include women or children.
The attack could further complicate efforts by mediators to restart cease-fire talks between Israel and Hamas. The next round is scheduled for next Thursday.
